Various Types of Ceramic Tiles

With regards to color, the regular way of using ceramic tile was to stay as neutral as possible, since most of the tiles sold for home use were white, almond or gray. Even though white and almond are still the most commonly used colors of tiles today, people are experimenting more with color, as newer tile colors are not only becoming warmer and brighter, but also clearer and cleaner.

Tile Shapes and Sizes

The 4 1/4" square wall tile is still the most popular tile sold nowadays. However, a growing trend is seen towards the use of larger tiles, like the 8"x8" tiles, 10"x10" tiles and even 12"x12" tiles. Those who are into do-it-yourself type of projects might find it difficult to install anything bigger than these sizes, because the required underlayment has to be absolutely even and level.

For most tile laying projects, small one-inch tiles are also generally used. These tiles are often called mosaic tiles, because you can mix different colors to create a variety of borders, patterns, or pictures, with even made to order custom patterns. Mosaic tiles are usually available in 12"x12" or 12"x24" sheets that make them easier and quicker to set.

Types of Ceramic Tiles

While most ceramic tile is glossy, there are several types. Glazed tile is made from a clay mixture pressed into shape, with a glaze applied to the top and baked on. This glaze does not go all the way from side to side, so the color inside can be seen if the tile gets chipped. Available in a variety of decorative styles, glazed tiles usually have patterns or hand-painted designs, and come in high-gloss, matte or abrasive slip-resistant finishes. Although glazed tiles tend to get scratched on frequently used countertops, they are also ideal for walls and floors; just make make sure that the finish is not slippery or can easily show scratches.

Mosaic tile is made from different types of clay with the color pigments added in, making the color go all the way through the tile. Because of their moisture resistant properties, mosaic tiles can be applied to almost any surface, and they are also stain-proof and not easily chipped as well.

Quarry tile is a broad term for any tile made from a mixture of clays. These tiles are typically deep red in color and are also left unglazed. Because they are porous and irregular in shape, they are mostly used for interior floors. While the surface of these tiles can be either sealed or unsealed, it is important to note that they might be stained if left unsealed.
