Ceramic Tile as Flooring Material

As a homeowner, it is no secret that a lot of hard work goes into making the kitchen and bathroom look the best as possible. For these areas of the home, ceramic tile is usually the best choice for flooring material, as it combines strength and durability with classic good looks. Of course, when a single tile breaks, it can completely throw the entire room in disarray, making it look unsightly.

Types of Tiles

Tile products are available in a wide variety of colors, patterns and textures. While choosing the perfect tile for your needs from this large selection can be a bit overwhelming, consumers are more confused by the difference between each types of tile. It is important to note that each type of tile has its own unique composition, which determines its body color, texture and density. In general, there are three basic types of tile: Ceramic, Porcelain and Glass. Most consumers are confused by the difference between ceramic and porcelain.

Installation Methods

Various installation methods are used to install ceramic tiles. Keep in mind that selection of quality installation materials, commonly referred to as "setting materials", is as important as your tile selection, as this will often result in a successful installation of the ceramic tiles.

Thin set - A form of cement or bonding mortar, usually sold in 50-pound bags. Thin set is relatively inexpensive and is commonly used to install floor tiles over a concrete or other similar surface.

Grout - The cement that fills in the joints between the tiles. Grout is a setting material that is used with any ceramic tile installation. There are two main types: non-sanded and sanded.

Organic adhesive - Also referred to as glue, organic adhesive is used to install ceramic tiles on walls, counter tops and others.

Latex bonding chemicals - Another method of installation in which the chemicals are mixed in with the thin set to increase the bond strength.

Sealers - Used for unglazed types of tiles, like Mexican and terra-cotta tiles. The process involved for the installation of these tiles can be quite complex.
